You search for your own business on Google — by name, or the way a customer would, like “bakery near me” — and it is not there. If you are asking why is my business not showing up on Google, you are not alone, and the cause is almost never one big mystery. It is usually one of six fixable basics: Google does not know you exist yet, your details disagree with each other, or your website gives Google nothing clear to show. This guide walks through the six fixes in plain English, in the order we check them.
First, check what “not showing up” actually means
Try three searches: (1) your exact business name plus your city, (2) what you sell plus your city, like “plumber in Scarborough”, and (3) your service plus “near me” at your business address. If you appear for your name but not your service, Google knows you — your visibility is just weak, and fixes 2 to 6 are your list. If you do not appear even for your exact name, start at fix 1: Google may not have a verified record of your business at all.
Fix 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
For local searches, Google shows businesses mainly from Google Business Profiles — the free listing that powers the map results. If you never claimed yours, claimed it but never finished verification, or left half the fields blank, Google has little reason to show you.
Claim or create the profile, complete verification, and then fill in everything: the correct main category (for example “bakery”, not just “store”), your services, opening hours, phone number, website link, and real photos of your shop, your work and your team. A complete profile is not paperwork — it is the raw material Google uses to decide whether you match a search.
Fix 2: Make your name, address and phone match everywhere
Google cross-checks your business details across the web. If your profile says one phone number, your website says another, and a directory lists an old address from before you moved, Google trusts the listing less — and confused customers call the wrong number.
Pick one exact version of your name, address and phone number, and use it word-for-word on your profile, website, social pages and any directory listing you control. Your website matters most here: it is the page you fully control, and Google treats it as the reference version of your details.
Fix 3: Give Google a website it can actually read
A business with no website — or only a social media page — gives Google very little to show in regular search results, and nothing at all for many service searches. Social profiles are rented space; search engines index them inconsistently, and they rarely outrank a real website for “service + city” searches.
Your website also needs to be readable by Google: pages that load as normal text (not only as pictures of text), a page for each main service, and your city named in plain words. See the shape of a simple, readable site in our Flamingo Floral & Gifts sample site — services, area and contact details in clear text on every page. If you have a site Google has never indexed, that is a technical check included in our SEO services in Toronto work.
Fix 4: Say what you do and where you do it — on the page
Google cannot show you for a search your pages never mention. A homepage that says “welcome” and “quality service” matches almost nothing. One that says “family bakery in North York — fresh sangak, barbari and pastries, baked daily” matches real searches, because it uses the words customers type. Check each main page: does it name the service, the city, and how to contact you, in plain sentences? That habit — specific words instead of slogans — is the core of being found, and it costs nothing but an honest rewrite.
Fix 5: Earn reviews — steadily, honestly
For map results especially, Google weighs how many reviews a business has and how it responds to them. A profile with no reviews is easy for Google to pass over in favour of a competitor customers have vouched for.
Ask real customers, after real work, with a direct link to your review page — and reply to every review, good or bad, briefly and politely. Never buy reviews or use fake ones: they break Google’s rules, get removed, and can get the profile suspended — the opposite of being found.
Fix 6: Keep the signals fresh
Google favours businesses that look alive. Update your profile when your hours change (holidays included), add new photos a few times a year, and keep your website’s hours, prices and services current — an out-of-date site tells Google and customers alike that the business may not be active. None of this is a one-day switch: profiles, indexing and reviews build over weeks, which is why starting with the basics, in this order, beats chasing tricks.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to show up on Google after I fix these things?
Verification can take days, and Google then needs time to re-check your details and pages. Think in weeks, not hours, and keep your signals consistent while you wait — changing details back and forth restarts the trust-building each time.
I have a Facebook or Instagram page. Is that enough for Google?
Not for most service searches. Social pages help customers who already know your name, but Google’s local and regular results are built mainly from Business Profiles and websites. A simple website of your own gives Google a stable, readable record of what you do and where — social pages work best as a support act, not the main stage.
Can anyone guarantee me the top spot on Google?
No — and be careful with anyone who does. Rankings depend on your competition, your area and signals that build over time. What can honestly be promised is the work itself: a complete verified profile, matching details everywhere, a readable website with the right words on it, and a steady flow of real reviews.
